Abstract
Background and Objectives: Despite the importance of history as a field reflecting the heritage, civilization, and cultural, social, political, natural, and economic identity of every nation, teaching history in schools in our country has consistently faced numerous challenges. Today, relying on traditional, teacher-centered methods of teaching history, such as lectures, rote reading of textbooks, verbally delivering a large amount of information, and depending on students’ memorization, yields little beyond boredom and poor retention of information in students’ minds. The present study aims to examine the effectiveness of the modern STEAM method, with a cross-disciplinary approach (using a discipline as a lens for teaching other disciplines), for optimal teaching of history at the secondary level. The goal of this article is, alongside presenting strategies, to offer practical recommendations for history teachers based on this educational approach. Methods: To this aim, a chapter from the secondary school history textbook for 11th grade has been analyzed, and a cross-disciplinary approach of STEAM teaching method for this chapter is presented and explained as a model.
