Abstract

Background and Objectives: This article aims to explain the role of validating historical documents in developing critical thinking skills in history students, focusing on a sample document concerning the forced sedentarization (Takhteh-Qapo) of nomads in Lorestan (1927). Historical documents, as primary sources, while possessing authenticity, are always subject to distortion and bias due to their compilation by bureaucratic elites. Methods: Therefore, the scientific criticism of documents through two methods—external criticism (examining physical authenticity and historical context) and internal criticism (content analysis and author motivations)—is essential. In this research, a document from the early Pahlavi period about the forced sedentarization of nomads in Lorestan was analyzed as a case study using these methods. Findings: The findings indicate that teaching this process not only helps students evaluate historical sources more accurately but also strengthens their critical thinking skills, including analysis, inferential reasoning, and questioning. Conclusion: This article concludes that incorporating the methodical teaching of document criticism into the history curriculum is a fundamental step in training critical historians and enhancing the quality of historical research.
