Abstract

Background and Objectives: Citizenship education requires developing critical thinking, social interaction, and awareness of global rights and values. History, a key humanity branch, is vital for this by enabling students to examine past experiences and comprehend social, political, and cultural structures. This study aims to explore the challenges and solutions for effectively integrating citizenship education into history teaching. Methods: The research utilizes a qualitative methodology based on a review of library and archival sources. Findings: Key challenges identified include a lack of emphasis on critical thinking, the dominance of homogenizing national narratives, political/cultural influences, weak curriculum design, shortage of resources, deficiencies in teacher training, and the absence of a global citizenship framework. Proposed solutions are fostering historical and critical thinking, designing curricula focused on human rights and global values, strengthening teacher training, incorporating technology and multimedia, using integrative approaches, and encouraging active student engagement. Conclusion: This paper emphasizes the need to revise the objectives, content, and methods of history education and foster collaboration among educational institutions, teachers, families, and policymakers. This shift can transform history education into a central component of citizenship education.
